Learn from the best in this three- day workshop and optional photography seminar.

This fun and unique workshop hosted at Wolf Park has Jan giving lectures on painting wildlife (emphasis on wolves, foxes and coyotes, but also on all wildlife including African and Rainforest) and also the business of art.  In conjunction with Jan’s artistry, the biologists of Wolf Park talk about wolf behavior and anatomy. Participants will be able to go in with wolves to get real time hands-on experience.  They also get multiple opportunities to take photographs and/or video of the wolves for reference.

Jan Martin McGuire is recognized as one of the top wildlife artists in the world today.  She has been painting professionally for 25 years.  During this time she has studied with many artists including Robert Bateman, Carl Brenders and John Seerey-Lester.  Jan has incorporated many of their techniques into her own style, and she will be sharing these with the seminar participants.  There will be opportunities for constructive and gentle personal critiques of participants’ artwork by Jan.

Jan’s work has appeared in many magazines including a recent cover and feature in Wildlife Art News and Southwest Art.  Her paintings have hung in many prestigious venues including the Smithsonian Museum, London’s Natural History Museum, National Geographic Society and Gilcrease Art Museum of Natural History. She has also had a one-person show at the Dallas Museum of Natural History and Woolaroc Museum.  Jan has had her paintings included in many Birds In Art exhibits at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum as well as most of the Society of Animal Artists ‘Art and the Animal’ exhibits.  Most recently she had her first solo show in New York.  Painting Safari: Jan Martin McGuire’s scenes from the African wild  hung in the corporate gallery of Forbes Magazine on 5th Ave. in New York, March 21-May 3, 2008.

Her work is in many private and corporate galleries worldwide including Forbes Magazine, Peregrine Fund/World Center for Birds of Prey and Raymond James Corporate Offices in Florida.

Jan welcomes artists in all mediums, and at all levels, from amateur to professional to join her for this three day intensive.   Because this workshop consists of three very full days, participants do not actually paint while at Wolf Park.  Instead they listen, watch and learn.  Jan will do slide lectures, virtual demonstrations, mini demos on subjects like how to paint fur, eyes, moss, bark, etc.  She gives complete steps and walks participants through from beginning to end.

Why come to Wolf Park?
Wolf Park offers a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with a pack of wolves.  Combine that with the presence of the artistry of Jan Martin McGuire, and it is an unparalleled workshop for those interested in wolves and wildlife art.  Part of Jan’s philosophy of wildlife art is that a good artwork presents its subject matter in an accurate way — the habitat, the behavior, the physicality of the animal should all be based on the true nature of the species.  Whether you observe wildlife on safari in Africa, or in a non-profit wildlife facility like Wolf Park, you learn how to represent the animals accurately as well as beautifully.

People from around the world have attended Wolf Park’s seminars and enjoyed the amazing opportunity to interact with Wolf Park’s socialized wolves.  The staff at Wolf Park works with these wolves from the time they are ten days old, and on through the life of the wolves, to keep them relaxed and happy in their semi-natural environment where they live.  This intensive work with the wolves creates animals that are stress-free, and therefore can be seen and photographed looking natural, and comfortable.  It also allows visitors to see them from very close up, to study their fur, their bone structure, their gait.

The wolf and bison demonstration is completely unique to Wolf Park as well.  A couple of wolves are released into the pasture where our small herd of bison live.  The wolves approach, and “test” the bison, looking for vulnerability.  Our healthy bison have nothing to fear from these 90 lb predators, but seeing the bison and wolves together, interacting, is an amazing experience.  Seminar participants often get to go into the field in a truck to see it up close, and take photos.

Wolf Park also offers seminars on wolf behavior, dog behavior, wolf conservation, the comparison of dogs and wolves, and on photography.
