Behavior and Management of Captive Wolves

Wolf Park offers seminars based on research conducted here since 1972. Seminars consist of lectures, discussions, films, video and slide presentations, extensive observation of wolf behavior and instruction on observing behavior objectively.

Five day seminars are an introduction to the field of ethology (animal behavior) and ethological concepts and theories, using wolves and their behavior as an example to learn from. While the seminars do focus mainly on wolves, this is a wonderful way to learn about animal behavior in general, and specifically the behavior of your own domesticated wolf -- the dog. No scientific background or previous study is necessary -- just a willingness to learn.

Exact lecture topics vary from year to year; however, all seminars include:

• Observation of hunting techniques during the Wolf/Bison Demonstration
• Observation of the wolves and practice in data collection techniques
• Meeting the wolves of the main research pack and other animals of Wolf Park
• Participation in the Training Game
• Introduction to ethological principles and concepts
• Classical and operant conditioning techniques
• "Play" and "jealousy" in wolves
• Rank order
• Imprinting of young animals
• Wolf x dog hybrids

Because these seminars include the opportunity to meet Wolf Park's wolves, we insist that participants be 18 years of age or older and able-bodied enough to withstand a hearty greeting from a 100-pound wolf.

Five-day seminars require a $100 non-refundable deposit to hold a spot. Payment in FULL is required 2 months before the seminar or you will lose your reservation and deposit. If you cancel between 6 months and 2 months prior to the seminar, you will be refunded any payments made MINUS the deposit. No payments will be applied towards future seminars.

Seminars are limited to 25 participants. If you sign up for a seminar which is full, we will notify you and refund your registration.

CANCELLATION POLICY
Wolf Park reserves the right to cancel a seminar if there are fewer than 5 participants registered as of 30 days before the start of the seminar.  In the case of cancellation, we will refund registration fees in full, or the participant can choose to transfer into a different seminar.
